Model railways have captured the imagination of children and adults ever since the hobby first began in the mid-19th century.

In those early days, model railways came in the shape of wooden toys, before advances in technology saw them replaced by tinplate and diecast models by manufacturers such as Hornby, Tri-ang and Bassett-Lowke to name just a few.

As an auction house with more than 60 years’ experience, Warwick & Warwick has long been trusted to value and sell thousands of model trains in our specialist model railway auctions.

Model railway values obviously vary depending on their size, the number of locomotives and accessories which make up the toy train collection.

However, because model railways are a hobby for modellers and collectors alike, even damaged old trains, N gauge locomotives and model railways accessories often fetch more than you might expect in our model railways auction. This is probably because they can be used as spares or lovingly restored.

That’s why it is always worth getting in touch to get an accurate valuation or find out the sort of prices which have been achieved for similar items in toy train auctions we have held previously.

With six specialist model railway auctions held every year, each sale has miscellaneous items in it from most of the more well-known manufacturers, including Airfix, Bachmann, Dapol, Hornby, Lima, Rivarossi, Slaters and Wrenn.

This is followed by a detailed listing of individual model locomotives, OO-gauge layouts and rolling stock from a wide range of manufacturers including European and USA HO gauge, as well as British pattern items.

Having become one of the leading auctioneers and valuers of collectables in this country, since being established in 1958, our model railway auctions are always well attended. Bids can also be lodged online, over the phone or by email.

If you have any vintage train sets for sale or model railway layouts to be valued, our team of experts will happily offer free advice, in complete confidence, on any matters relating to buying or selling in one of our model train auctions. We also arrange sales by private treaty and can carry out valuations for probate or insurance purposes.

Viewing times for our model railway auctions

Members of the public or model railways enthusiasts who would like to inspect in person before they buy can view our model railways & trains at Chalon House in Warwick.

The viewing times for our toy train auctions are:

  • 9am – 4.30pm on the Friday, Monday and Tuesday prior to the sale.
  • 8.30am onwards on the day of the auction.

Please note there will be no viewing facility outside of these periods and viewing is not available at the Court House.

Model railways always generate great interest among bidders on the day of a sale.

But there is actually no need to attend our model railway auctions in person if you want to buy toy trains because commission bids can be taken in advance.

Bids can be placed via our online facility, by telephone, post, fax or email. For further details, please visit our Online Catalogue.

If you would like to receive a free printed catalogue, or alternatively to apply for a catalogue subscription, click here.

It is worth noting that the printed catalogue contains far fewer illustrations of lots than the online catalogue and, unless you plan to attend the model railways auction sale, you will be better served viewing the online catalogue.
