December 2023 Stamp Auction report

7th December 2023

This festive period saw another fantastic philatelic auction for Warwick & Warwick, and with enough goodies in our sleigh to make Santa Claus jealous, it came as no surprise!

The first of our sale highlights, a wonderful and expertly collected range of Thailand which was broken down into 24 desirable lots by our talented team of describers. Although all sold exceedingly well, with most selling well above estimate there were two lots that really caught our attention! The first being lot 243, a collection of cancellations of the ships of the Siam Steam Navigation Company. Originally estimated at just £300, a battle between two determined bidders resulted in a winning final bid of £3,400, over 10 times the original asking price! The other stand-out of the Thailand range was lot 235, an early to modern range in 3 albums selling for a whopping £8,000, £5,500 over the original estimate!  A remarkable result for us here at Warwick & Warwick and the happy vendor.

The GB as usual, stood its ground firmly, and sensing it might be outshone by Thailand produced some truly spectacular results! Lot 389 is one of these lots, a collection of Officials including many better items with Brandon certificates. A popular lot with much interest on the telephone and from live bidders on Easy Live Auction, a winning bid was placed for £6,750 from one of the lucky telephone bidders!

Perhaps the stand-out sale of the entire auction was lot 290. A collection of the Queen Victoria line engraved issues housed in a Stanley Gibbons Utile album, it included many scarcities such as the Charles Whiting 1d Essay and a study of in total 121 1d blacks, 3 of which were examples of the sought after plate 11 issue! A fantastic collection that truly deserved the attention paid to it achieving a final hammer price of £13,000!

It was another varied and successful sale for our vendors, bidders and us here at Warwick & Warwick and we hope you have been successful in your bids and wish you luck for future sales.
