A 19th century Afghan flintlock jezail musket is offered in our 21st October medal and militaria auction with an estimate of £150.
The musket has a Tower lockplate marked with a crown over G.R. and I. Gill. It has the characteristic Afghan curved butt stock inlaid with bone or mother of pearl. The barrel is held to the stock with 9 engraved brass bands, with an overall length of 5 feet. Many of the jezails of this period were fitted with lock mechanisms removed from captured British weapons such as the Brown Bess which were captured in large numbers during the First Afghan War of 1839-42.
