Today marks the day when 30 years ago, in Japan, the very first Pokémon games, Red and Green, were released. Since then, the games and the franchise have changed a lot, with new games, new collectables and the ever-popular trading card game. People (including the writer of this article) have grown up with this franchise and attended events that include people aged from 9 to 90, enjoying these strange-looking animals.

As you may know, we sell cards and even video games at Warwick & Warwick, with our experts providing insight on this evolving market. The trading card game is as popular as ever, causing buyouts of sealed product, the explosion of graded cards and the market. The most recent set, Mega Evolution – Ascended Heroes, had people queuing around the high street waiting to just try and get their hands on this product.

People often wrongly believe that when it comes to Pokémon cards, it's only the first set that has any value; after that, the value just doesn’t exist. This cannot be further from the truth, all sets going back to the base set, through to the Ruby & Sapphire series, up until the new Mega Evolution sets have cards which have been able to hold to their collectable value.

In our September 2025 sale we had the pleasure in Auctioning a Base Set holographic rare Blastoise (2/102), Charizard (4/102) and Venusaur (15/102). This lot sold for £240. We also auctioned a Dark Charizard Team Rocket set holographic rare (4/82), 1st edition for £370 and Lugia Neo Genesis holographic rare (9/111) for £280

So, if you have any Pokémon cards that you are thinking about getting valued and sold, feel free to contact us at info@warwickandwarwick.com and our experts can advise you of the value.
