A block of 4 of the ‘Rainbow’ colour trials in the deep red-brown shade (state 3) on white wove paper. Not often seen in this large of a multiple, this example previously passed through our hands at Warwick & Warwick in the 1980s.

Promoted by the fear that unscrupulous individuals were removing the red ‘Maltese Cross’ cancellations from Penny Blacks, the so-called ‘Rainbow’ colour trials involved a range of inks and chemicals.
Lot 214 will be offered in the August Philatelic Auction at Warwick & Warwick with an estimate of £1600.
