14th January 2026 Philatelic Auction Report

How better to welcome the New Year than with another exceptional Philatelic Auction!

The first of our standouts was lot 1, a genuine worldwide collection in a single well-filled Stanley Gibbons Imperial Foreign Countries album. With issues to c.1895, the album was rich with classics and unusual items, but its strength was in France and French Colonies, Germany and States, Central and South America and parts of Asia. A sought-after collection, the album sold for a hammer price of £9750.

Lot 73 also performed well. A thematic range of RAF covers many of which were signed with signatures including Peter Townsend VC, Micky Mount DFC, William Reid VC and Rod Roldey DSO. Also noting an Imperial War Museum Colditz reunion cover, 7th Mar 1980, signed by 28 WW2 inmates. After a flurry of bids, the collection sold for £500, well above the original estimate!

The world lots continued the trend, with lot 133, a mint Belgian collection ranging from 1869 to 1963, exemplifying this. With a good range of middle-period sets and issues, the collection attracted serious bidders, culminating in an eventual hammer price of £1250. Scandinavia also performed well with lot 166, an unusual collection of postal history, selling for £400—not what you see every day!

Great Britain, as usual, surpassed expectations across the board and started with the specialised and fascinating collection of postal history from the Cumberland, Westmorland and Furness area. The collection was described and catalogued geographically, with most lots selling well above estimate, the highlights including selections from Cockermouth, Kirkby Lonsdale and Penrith.

The Queen Victoria section achieved spectacular results, most notably lot 188, an unused collection on KABE album leaves, including a range of penny blacks and two penny blues, supposedly unused but highly likely cleaned and certainly regummed. Despite this, the lot went on to attract much interest and, with bids from around the world, resulted in a hammer price of £6250. Lot 193 achieved similar heights, an unused plated range of 1864 penny reds went on to far surpass the original estimate with an eventual hammer price of £1050!

It was another varied and successful sale for our vendors, bidders and us here at Warwick & Warwick—hopefully setting the tone for the year to come.
