Warwick and Warwick’s final philatelic auction of the year was full of festive cheer and with enough goodies in our sleigh to make Father Christmas jealous, saw strong bidding from across the globe!
The first of these treats was lot 134, a specialised King George VI collection of Ceylon Postal History. Well-written in eight Stanley Gibbons Simplex albums, this collection featured rare postmarks, experimental mail, and other fascinating items. Attracting much interest, lot 134 eventually sold for a hammer price of £800.

Large and mixed lots also performed well, most notably lots 40 and 41. Each comprising of 10+ boxes of material, there was plenty of sorting to be done and therefore good scope for potential resale!

The less frequently seen, but ever-popular, signed covers also saw excellent results with both lots in the sale selling for above and beyond their original estimates. The first of the two, lot 105, included a range of signed 1966 World Cup First Day Covers and a thank you letter on 10 Downing Street letterheaded paper handwritten and signed by Winston Churchill with original typed envelope marked PRIME MINISTER. After much bidding this collection, sold for twice the estimate with a hammer price of £700. Lot 106, comprised of only two items: a 1966 World Cup First Day Cover signed by Bobby Moore and World Cup Willie postcard signed by Alf Ramsey, both cancelled with Harrow and Wembley cds, again selling over estimate for an impressive £350.

As usual, Great Britain exceeded expectations throughout but most notably the range of 1d blacks and other Queen Victoria single high-value items. Highlights include lot 274 a range of 26 penny blacks from various plates which sold for an impressive £1,800. Another noteworthy surface-printed lot was lot 286 a collection of 2d blues, each neatly cancelled with numeral Maltese Cross cancels which had a hammer price of £650. Line-engraved issues also saw strong bidding a fine example of which was lot 291, a fine used 1867-80 2 shilling brown which although showing evidence of re-perfing sold for a very fine £350.

It was another varied and successful sale for our vendors, bidders and us here at Warwick & Warwick and we hope you have a very merry Christmas and look forward to wishing you well in the New Year!
