The COVID-19 heath crisis has led many companies to change their practices to bring them into line with the current government safety guidelines. So, for the safety of our customers and our staff, our 16 June 2021 Banknotes sale was a closed-door auction, with no room bidders allowed.
There was still plenty of interest in the auction however with a plethora of book bids and a great number of bidders on the telephone.
We began with the hammered British coins section. Highlights include this Edward VI 1551 crown which realised £930. This James I second coinage crown sold for £750 and this Charles I Chester Mint half crown achieved £4,080.
Moving on to the British milled section this 1739 two guineas realised £3,600. This 1739 guinea sold for £1,380, this George III emergency issue oval countermark dollar achieved £324 and this 1936 crown realised £600.
In the British gold section this 1817 sovereign sold for £1,560 and this 1821 sovereign achieved £930.
Modern gold coins also proved popular with this 2019 ‘The Great Engraver’ William Wyon £200 proof realising £38,400.
In the world coins section a number of coins from China were offered. This 1920 50 cents sold for £4,580, this 1911 10 cents achieved £4,680 and this c1912 20 cents (2chiao) realised £2,520.
