Wednesday 11th January – The first Philatelic Auction of the Year
‘Start the year as you wish to go on’ goes the adage, and if yesterday’s Philatelic auction is anything to go by 2023 is going to be a bumper year for Warwick and Warwick!
Lot 1 got the sale started with a BANG! A spectacular King George VI British Commonwealth ‘A to Z’ collection housed in a single Stanley Gibbons album reached, after a valiant battle between two worthy bidders, a very handsome sum of £12,500 - £2,500 overestimate!
The next selection to tickle our customers fancy was the impressive range of Ireland. The star of this section though was lot 199, a lovely accumulation of early items including a range of 1907-16 Forerunners and many other exciting rarities. Valued at £700, this lot quickly climbed to well over double this estimate, eventually selling for a grand total of £1800.
Great Britain also had its wins this sale, starting with the truly striking lot 362. A marvellous 1840 1d black, OL, from plate 2, boasting four very large and beautifully even margins, cancelled with a clear and complete red Maltese Cross. This attractive stamp doubled its original estimate of £250, selling for £500 – only £25 off its quoted catalogue value!
The GB section continued from strength to strength with most lots selling well, especially a range of hand illustrated Edwardian covers. These eye-catching and attractive covers found in lots 376-9 included some handpicked accumulations of the better items and then a lot constituting the remainder. Although all sold well, far surpassing their £200 estimates, it was the bulk remainder range that trumped all, selling for a whopping £1900 – proving sometimes more is actually more!
