Warwick & Warwick cigarette card auction report 20th May 2015

The first part of the cigarette card section contained several larger collections and accumulations, with many realising figures above estimate.  A lot containing sets and part sets by Franklyn Davey, Hignett, Hill, L&B etc, estimated at £350, realised £566. A large accumulation with Ogden, Wills and other sets which required further sorting estimated at £350, sold well over estimate, realising £1000! Another lot featuring part sets from several premium brands such as Cope, Salmon & Gluckstein, Singleton & Cole, Taddy and others estimated at £230, fetched £540.

Several collections by individual manufacturers also achieved good results. A Carreras collection estimated £280 made £377; a Gallaher range estimated at £200 realised £340; and two Ogden collections, estimated £250 and £180, achieved £420 and £260 respectively.

Many of the individual sets also exceeded their estimates. Some of the most notable results include a set of Dobie \'Weapons of All Ages\', with an estimate of £70 fetching £106; and a set of Murray \'Dancers\', estimated £50, achieving £77. A Player \'Gallery of Beauty Series\', part set of 40 cards in \'fair to good\' condition, estimated at £90 made £140. A Smith \'Famous Explorers\' set in \'very good\' condition, except some cards with small faults, realised £212; and finally a Wills \'Scissors Drum Horses\' (Horizontal Back) set, with an estimate of £50 made £60. Unusually the Taddy sets underperformed, but condition may have been a factor.

The sale also contained a small number of trade card collections, including a range with sets from Barbers, Cadbury, Typhoo and others making £260, and a collection including sets by Kane, Primrose Confectionery, Barratt etc, with an estimate of £150 realising £200.
