The May stamp Auction included an extraordinary collection of specialised Italian items, including proofs, essay colour trials, overprints, etc, broken into various lots. All of the lots sold, achieving prices up to 15 times the estimates.
Lot 388 was a collection of imperforate proofs & essays from the earliest Italian issues. The lot sold for £9,000.
Lot 391 covered middle period issues, this reached £6,900.
Lot 393 was a collection of errors & varieties which achieved £2,880.
Also in the Italy section, a collection of original stamp design artwork by the artist Corrado Mezzano in 30 lots also attracted worldwide interest. Comprising adopted or un-adopted designs, this was a unique opportunity to buy the original work of one of the world’s greatest designers from the mid-20th Century. In the GB section of the auction a ‘V.R.’ Official 1d black sold for £5,760.
An 1867-83 £5 orange sold for £2,880.
