As the nights become darker and we get closer to the new year, we celebrate our final Toys, Postcards and Cigarette Cards auction of the year with a bang! With some unique and impressive lots.
We begin with our Cigarette Card section, with this pair of rare Clarke’s Cricketers and Footballers, including famous faces like W.G. Grace and W. Meredith. An early example of people’s fascination with collecting sporting cards and items that will be the crown jewel of any collection. Lot 28 reached a hammer price of £2,200, and lot 29 sold for £3,500.
Now moving on to our postcard section, we had a fantastic range of Strongmen, including great bodybuilders like Sandow, Zass and Athlone. A popular genre among postcard collectors shows that even in an era before our modern one, people could easily devote their lives to becoming a modern-day Hercules. This lot achieved a hammer price of £460.
This sale, like the one before, showed off an excellent range of Star Wars collectables. Lot 299 displayed the climactic battle between Obi-Wan Kenobi and Anakin Skywalker from (what is the author of this report's favourite film of the franchise and is, in his opinion, the best Star Wars film) Episode III: Revenge of the Sith. This lot sold for a total of £370.
Onto this impressive range of King and Country Model soldiers with lot 311, featuring ranges of Pike and Musket soldiers, typically found on the battlefields of the English Civil War. Now, the lucky winner of this lot can recreate the many battles between the Roundheads and the Cavaliers (plus some sneak appearances from the 3 Musketeers and their friend). This lot achieved a hammer price of £525.
Finally, less about an individual lot but more a section, this sale held a large and impressive range of Matchbox vehicles, including many of the classic sets, showing that these items are very much sought after.
